IBM Launches New Cybersecurity and Data Analytics | CyberPro Magazine

IBM has announced the introduction of two new SkillsBuild certificates in cybersecurity and data analytics, developed in collaboration with community colleges. These certificates will be available to students at several community college systems across the United States, beginning this fall. This initiative aims to equip students with essential skills in AI, cybersecurity, and data analytics, crucial for the modern workforce.

IBM Addressing the Skills Gap

IBM’s new certificates in cybersecurity and data analytics aim to address a growing skills gap in the tech industry. With the rise of AI and automation, there’s an increasing need for professionals adept at securing data and extracting insights to drive business decisions.

According to a study by the IBM Institute of Business Value, 40% of the workforce will need reskilling within the next three years due to AI and automation advancements. Lydia Logan, IBM’s Vice President for Global Education and Workforce Development, highlighted the pivotal role community colleges play in adopting essential technology skills for the workforce.

Designed for a wide range of learners, these certificates are accessible to individuals with varying educational backgrounds, from high school graduates to those with non-technical bachelor’s degrees. The courses are self-paced and experiential, preparing students for roles such as junior information security analysts, network security technicians, data visualization specialists, and entry-level marketing analysts. Developed with input from academic and industry experts, the certificates align with current employer demands and market trends, ensuring students gain relevant and in-demand skills.

Integration into Community Colleges

The integration of these certificates into community college curriculums is a significant step forward. Each certificate involves 60-65 hours of coursework, which can be incorporated into existing programs for college credits. The American Council on Education (ACE) has recommended 12 credits for the cybersecurity certificate and 8 credits for the data analytics certificate. Additionally, the coursework aligns with CompTIA SEC+ certification topics, enhancing its recognition among potential employers.

Community colleges across the country have already piloted these certificates with promising results. Dr. Courtney Monette from the Alabama Community College System emphasized the importance of these credentials in helping students start IT careers. Richard Grotegut from Diablo Valley College noted the positive impact of the cybersecurity credential on students, some of whom have secured employment in technical support roles. Colleen Simpson, President of Front Range Community College, expressed excitement about offering the new data analytics credential, highlighting its value in preparing students for a rapidly growing field.

Future Prospects and Collaboration

The successful piloting of the certificates in Alabama, Colorado, California, and Louisiana in 2023 has set the stage for broader implementation. Governor Jared Polis of Colorado praised the initiative for enhancing workforce development efforts, while Dr. Willie E. Smith, Chancellor of Baton Rouge Community College, emphasized the potential for Louisiana to become a leader in cybersecurity and data analytics through this collaboration. Joel Vargas, Vice President of JFF’s Education Practice, underscored the importance of scalable solutions to meet the evolving needs of the economy.

IBM’s commitment to skills-first education is evident in its goal to provide 30 million people with new skills by 2030. The IBM SkillsBuild program, which offers over 1,000 courses in AI, sustainability, cybersecurity, data analysis, and more, supports this mission. The program includes an online platform complemented by practical learning experiences and collaboration with a global network of partners.

Conclusion

The launch of IBM’s new SkillsBuild certificates in cybersecurity and data analytics marks a significant step in bridging the skills gap in the tech industry. By partnering with community colleges, IBM is ensuring that students across the country have access to valuable education and career opportunities in critical fields. As these programs expand, they hold the potential to significantly impact workforce development and innovation in the years to come.
